this play is not about Monica Lewinsky
Martín was thrilled to travel to Scotland! “Monica: This Play Is Not About Monica Lewinsky” made its WORLD PREMIERE at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the summer of 2019. After a brief run at New York's 59E59 Theatre, Monica landed at the Greenside Venue's Forest Theater in Edinburgh and ran from August 2nd-August 17th. Martín played the role of Sam, Monica’s long-time partner.
The play follows a woman named Monica through a series of relationships. Jumping in time between the 80s and present day, we watch as Monica reckons with her past self and navigates the cost of intimacy in a culture that no longer values privacy. With a strong female protagonist at the helm, this play asks, how do we, personally and nationally, react to sex and scandal and how are men and women treated differently when the private becomes public?

Playwright: Ji Jun Xiang
Director: Chen Shi-Zheng
Script Adaptation: David Greenspan
Music and Lyrics: Stephin Merritt
On October 14, 2018 Chen's music theater The Orphan of Zhao, which premiered in 2003 at New York's Lincoln Center, finally received its first performance in Asia. Envisioning the two works as a double bill, BMF hopes to expand the exploration of "Chineseness", breaking through the barriers between the East and West, to discover new possibilities latent in traditional Chinese theatrical works, and to introduce Chinese audiences to works by outstanding Chinese artists from overseas.
